Remembering Sir Geoffrey Bindman

Sir Geoffrey Bindman, the solicitor and activist founder of law firm Bindmans, has died at the age of 92.

As councillor in the London Borough of Camden, Sir Geoffrey had enabled the creation of Camden Community Law Centre, one of the UK’s earliest Law Centres. He then served as its first chair of trustees, and remained a lifelong supporter of the Law Centre. A civil liberties lawyer, lecturer, broadcaster and writer, he also advised the Race Relations Board and later the Commission for Racial Equality. In 1994, Sir Geoffrey was a UN Observer in South Africa’s first democratic elections.

“Sir Geoffrey Bindman was a committed stalwart of social justice in Camden and beyond who was instrumental in paving the way for the development of the Camden Community Law Centre. He was a strong advocate for social action in the community and through his work as local councillor in the early 1970s he campaigned to highlight the appalling housing conditions and other hardships endured by many residents in the private rented sector. On behalf of staff and trustees at North West London Law Centres, we extend our condolences to his family on their sad loss."
