London: New SRA Rules and Code of Conduct

New SRA Handbook and Code of Conduct

The Legal Services Board (the over-arching regulator of all the legal professions) approved the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s new Handbook and Code of Conduct in November 2018. It is expected to come into effect in the summer of 2019.

 

This workshop will ensure you understand:

·         The key changes from the 2011 Handbook

·         Changes to the Accounts rules

·         How the new rules relate to the Solicitors Competence Statement and training requirements

There will be opportunities to discuss how to implement the SRA’s requirements in Law Centres, to review ways of working and consider whether changes are needed, including:

·         Responsibilities of solicitors, caseworkers and others

 ·         Supervision

 ·         Practical application of SRA requirements

 ·         Case studies

 

The training is open to Law Centres and non-Law centre attendees, however, please note that it will be tailored towards how the changes affect solicitors working in the nfp-sector. 


Trainers: Vicky Ling and Matthew Howgate – experienced consultants in both private and not-for-profit legal practices


 

Lunch will be provided.  

The Trainers: 

Vicky Ling has significant experience in managing third sector legal services; a Law Centre, a CAB with an employed solicitor and an independent advice centre. She has provided specialist management consultancy to legal service providers, including many NfP agencies, for around twenty years.

Vicky was a founder member of the Civil Justice Council and served two terms. She was heavily involved in access to justice and pro bono issues. She has been a member of the Low Commission on legal advice and support, which is coming to the end of its work after almost three years.

Vicky is co-editor, (with Simon Pugh) and one of the contributors to the LAG Legal Aid Handbook, the 2017-18 edition will be out by April, (subsequent developments are posted on our blog www.legalaidhandbook.com). She has co-authored a complaints handling toolkit and client care toolkit (with Fiona Westwood) for the Law Society.  She is an approved Lexcel Consultant.

Matthew Howgate is a non-practising solicitor, freelance consultant and ex manager of Hackney Community Law Centre.  He has worked with a number of Law Centres, advice agencies and law firms on regulatory and compliance issues and is also one of the lead tutors on the LAPG Certificate in Practice Management

Cancellation Policy

Payments will be refunded if the LCN is notified of the cancellation 7 clear days in advance of the training event. If cancellation is made within 7 days of the training event, the payment will not be refunded. Non - attenders will not be refunded.

On occasion, LCN may need to cancel a course due to extenuating circumstances. The decision to cancel a training course is at the discretion of the Director. All delegates will be notified by e-mail. LCN will refund the course fees or offer a place at an alternative training event.  LCN will not be liable for any costs incurred by an individual or organisation eg travel expenses, for a cancelled course.
