Welfare Rights Caseworker/Solicitor

The successful candidate will be expected to be familiar with welfare rights law and knowledge of other areas of social welfare law would be an advantage.  They should also have experience of representation and advocacy.

The post holder should preferably be a solicitor or barrister with no less than one year post qualification experience, but consideration will be given to other experienced caseworkers who possess sufficient knowledge and skill.

The caseworker/solicitor will be responsible for fulfilling an LSC contract in welfare rights law through the provision of a legal advice and representation service.

Among the position’s key tasks:

* To offer legal advice to individuals and groups who make use of the Law Centre’s facilities

* To undertake case work in the area of debt and welfare rights law.  This will involve meeting a set target for clients eligible under the Legal Services Commission contract scheme.

* To represent clients, where appropriate, at tribunals, court hearings and other similar settings.

* To comply with all internal and external requirements for recording of time spent on all pieces of work undertaken and all statistics that is necessary to keep.

* Other areas of work undertaken by the Law Centre include:  employment, housing and immigration with regard being given to issues of discrimination in connection with all areas.  There may be some limited scope for involvement in these areas.

* To develop links with statutory bodies, voluntary organisations and community groups.

* To share in the Law Centre’s legal education work, as required.

* To keep appropriate administrative records and to share in the general administration of the Law Centre.
