Governance Project

Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the Governance Project was a two-year project developed jointly by the Law Centres Federation and AdviceUK. It aimed to improve the skills and knowledge of trustees and not-for-profit company directors, and to help them function well in an increasingly challenging regulatory, policy and funding environment.

This project developed out of the recognition that, while there was a large amount of training and published guidance available for Trustees and Management Committees in the not-for-profit sector, much of it was very general in nature. AdviceUK and the Law Centres Federation had both been approached by their members for guidance that was more relevant to the day-to-day issues that trustees of organisations providing legal advice services must contend with.

Therefore, this project sought to keep trustees informed of the latest developments in the advice sector, through a series of briefing papers circulated widely. The briefing papers also address the ways in which current issues were likely to impact on agencies, and how trustees could mitigate or avoid any potential disadvantages.
